I recently finished a client’s Anna Maria Welcome Home quilt. The original plan was to custom quilt this using digital patterns. Once I measured the quilt, I realized the log cabin blocks would not fit within my surface space on my longarm. I have a large space, however the blocks are big! I shifted the plan to free motion custom quilting.

I have done free motion quilting for many years. The longarm machines I have had access to did not have software with digitized patterns so I needed to become proficient at custom quilting. My practice has included working on paper to sketch and practice designs. For me, the practice of drawing with a pencil translates easily to drawing with the longarm machine.

I enjoyed the entire process of working on this quilt – from planning, sketching and ultimately free motion quilting – and think the final outcome is wonderful! Here’s a picture of the back:
