Squirrel on Stump Salt Cellar

read

In September, I created a fall/autumn batch of pincushions. I used an amber glass squirrel on stump salt cellar for the base and fabric from Robin Pickens Forest Frolic line for the pincushion. There are so many appealing details about this glass including its color as well as the fine detail in the glass such as bark on the trunk and fur on the squirrel. Also, for its size, the glass has a nice weight to it with a thick base. This glass was reproduced by the Guernsey Glass Company of Cambridge, Ohio. The Open Salt Compendium states that the original mold was created by Gillinder Glass around the 1890s. And according to Ed and Kay Berg of Salty Comments, their research shows that Gillinder Glass was the originator of the mold.

Guernsey Glass opened in 1967 and this salt cellar was made in the 1970s. The identifying mark of Guernsey Glass is an imprinted “B” in a triangle representing Harold Bennett, owner of the company. A brief history of Guernsey Glass can be found here.

I’ve had this piece in my salt cellar collection for many years. It was enjoyable to find the perfect fabric by Robin to use in this piece.

  1. Super cute ❤️❤️❤️

  2. Thank you for the information. I have a green Squirrel & Stump. I don’t see any mark on it, including the B . It does have a old handwritten tag inside the stump that says Guernsey. I will check out the Source you referenced to see If I can find More information on it.
    Thank You

    1. You’re welcome! I’ve found over the years that I come across new information regarding glass that sometimes contradicts what I previously found. There were a lot of glass makers that shut down or were purchased by another group. The new owner would reuse the molds from before but make slight modifications such as a marking like the B. The B is hard to find on that piece because it is obscured in the pattern. I have at least one other of these pieces and I want to check mine and see if the B is there. Thanks for your comment!
