The following video shows how to make a pincushion for a deep ceramic dish. In the video, I show how to “fill the space” inside of the pincushion. I have used this method with various types of glass or other containers when making pincushions.

Time Stamps for Video
1:10 – Making “top” pincushion
2:22 – Sewing “top” pincushion
3:10 – Stuffing “top” pincushion
3:30 – Measuring pincushion dish
3:43 – Adding second running stitch
4:03 – Evaluating pincushion in dish
4:16 – Adding more stuffing
4:44 – Adding button
6:00 – Evaluating pincushion “top” and dish to determine what is needed for “filler” pincushions
6:35 – Attaching “filler” pincushion (first one)
9:17 – Evaluating pincushion in dish
11:00 – Attaching second “filler” pincushion
13:30 – Evaluating pincushion in container
14:03 – Round dish example with “filler” pincushion attached along with explanation

STEPS to MAKE a PINCUSHION in a DEEP CERAMIC CONTAINER:
1. Make the “top” pincushion. This is the pincushion that will be showing and at the top of the container.
2. Evaluate how much empty space is below the pincushion. This can be done by measuring the depth of the container and the depth of the “top” pincushion.
3. Make a “filler” pincushion of appropriate size to be attached at the base of the pincushion.
–Left (below): “filler” pincushion is smaller
–Right (below): “filler” pincushions are similarly sized as “top”
Tip: you may need to make more than one “filler” pincushions to get the correct size.
4. Attach the “filler” pincushion with perle cotton size 8. Alternate stitches back and forth to attach the pincushions together. Threads should be taut and even all the way around. Secure with a knot when end stitches meet up with starting stitches.
5. Glue pincushion into container with the same instructions in my salt cellar pincushion pattern.

  1. Thanks so much for this – I was wondering how to do the deep vessels. Love the pins you stick into the cushions. Do you put some kind of stopper at the end of the beads so when the pin is pulled out of the cushion they stay on?

    1. You’re welcome! I’m glad you found it helpful. I glue the pins and typically use 1-3 seed beads at the base of all of the pins. I have a tutorial for the pins – https://stortsmarket.com/2022/10/19/beaded-pin-tutorial/
