Discovering Unique Textiles by Beaufort’s Warped Weavers

read

I spent a few days last week in Beaufort, North Carolina. The Beaufort Historical Association has a robust program for residents and tourists. The historic site has 10 unique buildings including two locations where the Warped Weavers work. I was able take a quick tour of their work spaces and see their looms. They use at least seven looms of varying sizes.

The Warped Weavers make various woven textiles which are for sale in the gift shop.

I picked up these mug rugs! I love the detail in the work and will get a lot of use from these. Additionally, the weavers include details about the pieces including how long it took to make it. These three 5½” x 4½” mug rugs took 10 hours to make. As a quilter, I appreciate the effort and physical labor to make these. And they look really cool.

Late last year I visited Old Salem and saw a weaver working a loom. I hope to try weaving on a loom one day – maybe even in Beaufort! Have you had an opportunity to weave or do you own a loom?

  1. Haha! It’s easy to get sucked into every textile art there is once you get started! I tell people my neighbor (a weaver) and I have a deal: she won’t start quilting and I won’t start weaving! That being said, there is this book on weaving with strips of quilt fabric…

    1. That’s so funny! And guess what? They were weaving with quilt fabric strips! They are organized by color and have made many rugs. If I lived closer I’d probably be a warped weaver – lol.
